E-commerce boosts sales of macadamia nuts in Yunnan

Income for macadamia nut farmers is on the rise in Lincang City in southwest China, thanks in part, to e-commerce.

Zhao Laoyun, a nut farmer from Banlong village, says his trees are doing well this year and he expects them to do even better next year.

"We harvest about four to five tons of nuts which totals about 50,000 yuan (about 7328 U.S. dollars) in income. Next year, we estimate our income will double," said Zhao Laoyun, resident of Banlong Village.

Those optimistic numbers are partly due to efforts by the local government to upgrade sales channels with e-commerce. Industry experts say it seems to be working.

"Internet sales are very beneficial for remote rural areas in Yunnan Province. Our sales have gone up more than 20 times since last year," said Chen Yuxiu, chairman of Yunnan Nuts Society.

In Lincang City there are about 400,000 mu (about 26,666.7 hectares) of bearing fruits trees. The average income per farmer is over 2,970 yuan (about 435.3 U.S. dollars).
