Asian elephants on family outings in Yunnan
5/17/2020

A group of 41 Asian elephants in four families were spotted in the rain forest of southwest China's Yunnan Province.

Observers estimate more elephant group outings will happen this year because of the higher temperatures and lower amount of water in the mountainous areas where the elephants reside.

There are two genuses of elephants: African and Asian. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Asian elephants are an endangered species on its Red List, while African elephants are listed as vulnerable.

The tropical rain forest in Yunnan is a major Asian elephant habitat.
