Many tens of millions of butterflies break their cocoons every June in southwest China's Yunnan Province.

Located at Maandi Township of Jinping Miao-Yao-Dai Autonomous Prefecture, the Butterfly Valley attracts numerous tourists to enjoy the amazing scene.

"Butterflies are all over the mountains. They are so beautiful. I have never seen so many butterflies back home. I am so happy to see all these lovely creatures here," said a tourist.

The largest number of butterflies living in this valley is the Stichophthalma Howqua, which is a species of golden butterfly.

Due to the recent extreme weather in the township, this year's transformation from cocoons to butterflies was 4-day earlier than usual and the number of butterflies also decreased.

"The blooming period of this year started from June 1 and it will last for 15 days. We estimate that the total number of butterflies will be 109 million, which is 10 million fewer than the previous year," said Yang Zhenwen, curator of Butterfly Museum in Butterfly Valley.

With a large altitude difference and rich forest source, Maandi Township has the ecological environment suitable for butterflies to live and multiply. With over 320 known kinds of butterflies, it has become one the areas that have the richest butterfly resources in the world.
