A critically endangered slender-billed vulture was spotted in Pu'er City of southwest China's Yunnan Province, which was the species' first advent in this region.

Forest police of Jinggu Dai and Yi Autonomous County in Pu'er received a report from a villager in Jinggu Town on July 4, saying that a large, unknown species of bird was trapped near a lake.

Upon receiving the call, forest police rushed to the scene and found the bird extremely weak and unable to move. They rescued the bird and took it to a shelter for rehabilitation.

After examining the bird, authorities did not find any injuries and deduced that it was weak and frail due to starvation. They sought some meat for the vulture to help it regain strength.

"We bought some fresh chicken and pork for it. Its appetite is quite astonishing. It eats a chicken and 500 grams of pork per day. After several days of feeding, it regained its physical strength gradually and showed better mental state, " said Zhao Yong, a forest policeman of Jinggu Bureau of Public Security.
