The Niri-Suxiong section of the Chengdu-Kunming railway reopened Sunday after repairs following landslides caused by heavy rain.

The section of the key railway linking the provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan in southwest China was blocked by landslides on Aug. 30. It reopened at 11:52, 23 minutes before a freight train safely passed through.

Local authorities mobilized more than 1,000 workers and used 80 units of rescue equipment to remove mud and stones from the track and built more pipe culverts for draining water.

The railway company has identified the section as a key area in flood and disaster prevention and control, and assigned staff to monitor it around the clock.
