A Chinese research team has recently discovered fossils of a new fish species in southwest China's Luoping County.

The fish, named "Yunnan storm fish" by the research team with the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is the world's oldest wartfish.

It is also the largest known carnivorous basal neofin fish in the Luoping biota 244 million years ago, a species with a relatively high position in the food chain.

It is learned that there are abundant Middle Triassic fish fossils in Luoping, but large carnivorous basal neofin fishes had not been found before. That's why some people thought the living environment of Luoping Biota was shallow waters and the marine ecosystem had not fully recovered by the time when they live. But the discovery of the Yunnan storm fish has changed people's understanding of Triassic biological recovery.
