The coffee industry has greatly kept local villagers in Jiangcheng County of southwest China's Yunnan Province out of poverty.

The 100 hectares of coffee plantation of the county lifted more than 600 local residents out of poverty.

Through technological innovation and scientific management, the county has effectively improved the coffee output and quality. It is estimated that the production of coffee will increase by 10 percent compared with last year, and the output value is expected to exceed six million yuan (about one million U.S. dollars).

"The residents mainly participate in the production management of the company in terms of dividend sharing and labor. On average, they earn 30,000 to 40,000 yuan (about 4,558.9 to 6,078.6 U.S. dollars) a year in income, for those on the higher end, and around 10,000 to 20,000 yuan (about 1,519.6 to 3,039.3 U.S. dollars) for regular workers," said Wang Yongqing, general manager of a local agricultural development company.

The enterprise has successfully established a set of systematic procedures for coffee growing and coffee cherry garden management. It has obtained the EU Ecocert Organic Standard through the development of ecological planting.

The harvested fresh fruits can be processed into other products and sold throughout the country through processes including peeling, fermentation, drying, baking, and grinding.

"The raw materials are mainly sold to Nestle and Starbucks, we also carry out product innovation in our research and development. Our products are also sold to China's first-tier cities of Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen. The added value of the industry has also increased," Wang added.

China has achieved the feat of removing all remaining counties from the country's poverty list.
