A wild elephant wandered into Meng'a Township of Menghai County, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in south Yunnan, on Jan. 28. It marched along main streets and stepped back from passing vehicles.

Another wild elephant was seen cross a check point near the China-Laos border in south Yunnan. Its crossing at dawn Jan. 27 was captured by cameras at check point. 

Yunnan is China's only habitat for wild Asian elephants. Thanks to protection efforts, the wild elephant population has increased there from 170 in the 1970s to about 300 today.
