Post-1990s Qingdao overseas returned student back home to plant tea

“Fenghanhong tea selected from our tea garden won the 1st grade award of the 12th Zhongcha Cup of national famous and good quality tea competition in 2017 China tea industry science and technology annual meeting.” In Qingdao Shandong tea modern agriculture model park, the post-1990s guy Zhang Guohao said with red certificate in his hands. Villagers now has more passion in tea planting after seeing his tea get awards.

24-year-old Zhang went to study in Canada after graduating from senior high school and majored in MBA in St. Mary University. After getting bachelor’s degree in business major in 2015, he decided to back home to plant tea.

After serious survey and consideration, he chose Houjia’an village in northern Puji town of Jiaozhou city as his tea garden. He invited institutes like Shandong University of Agriculture doing sampling test to soil and water here to verify the most ideal tea for the area through many channels.

In fall of 2016, Zhang bought using rights of 300 acres of fields, and introduced Jinxuan, Fudingdabai and a few Yellow Mountain tea species from Taiwan, Fujian and Anhui. In 2016 he planted 10 acres of clonal tea and made success.

In the very beginning, Zhang did not hurry to plant tea, instead he transported organic sheep waste from Inner Mongolia, plant grass to fertile field, then he gradually plant more tea. Meanwhile, he used new technologies like straw covering, biological prevention, insect-killing light and abrasion pleat, dipping irrigation, and promote machinery planting and new tea frying technologies R&D to plant famous tea in high starting points and with high standards.

After 2-year soil fertile, 100 acres of spring teas are planted this year. Little tea trees in the tea garden are now under rapid growth. To take care of these tea trees, Zhang lives in the tea garden all day long.

Tea trees usually needs 3 years growth before picking. In 2017 Zhang picked a few tea leaves in his tea garden, and fried some of them by a tea frying master he invited from Anhui University of Agriculture, and labeled with Fenghanhong brand. (Liu Dai)
