The construction of 5G network has been carried out in the 16 cities of Shandong province, with the number of 5G base stations exceeding 11,000 across the province.

The communication industry in Shandong vigorously pushes forward the construction of 5G network and the cultivation of 5G application. By the end of Feb. 2020, all the 16 cities of Shandong have conducted the construction of 5G network and the total number of 5G bases has surpassed 11,000. Jinan, Qingdao and Yantai have basically realized the continuous coverage of 5G network in key urban areas while other urban areas having carried out base station construction pilots.

Telecom operators are accelerating the construction of 5G application demonstration projects, with focus on the fields including new media, industrial Internet, transportation, education, health care and cultural tourism. 40,000 new 5G base stations will be built according to the 2020 work report of Shandong provincial government.

Shandong still faces difficulties and problems in the construction of 5G network. For example, the construction cost of a 5G base station is 300,000 yuan, tripling that of a 4G station. The launch of The Guidance on Digital Infrastructure Construction in Shandong Province and especially the promotion of the free opening of public facilities will reduce the cost of 5G construction and shorten the construction circle, thus, play a great role in pushing forward the development of 5G network in Shandong.

Next, Shandong will speed up the construction of 5G network, expand the 5G network coverage in urban areas of Jinan, Qingdao and Yantai and cultivate demonstration zones of 5G network. Other cities in Shandong will achieve 5G network continuous coverage in their key urban areas.
