The 2017 National Science and Technology Award Conference (NSTAC) was held January 8 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The annual conference awards both Chinese scientists with prominent achievements in natural science, technological invention, as well as sci-tech progress, and foreign scientists and organizations for their outstanding contributions to China's development in science and technology. It also confers the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award, the country's highest honor in the realm of science, to one or two Chinese scientists.

The awards that Chengdu obtained at the conference on January 8 accounts for 90% of those gained by Sichuan Province. Among the 28 awarded projects led by the province, 26 were from Chengdu.

Philip David Coates, Honorary Professor at Sichuan University (SCU) and Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, who has been working at the university since 2012, got the award for international cooperation. It was the first time for a foreign expert from SCU to get the honor.

Four projects from the Institute of Optics and Electronics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China and Chengdu Aircraft Design Institute, all based in Chengdu, were granted the National Award for Technological Invention.
