CHENGDU, May 21 (Xinhua) -- German industrial conglomerate Siemens on Tuesday launched its Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan province.

It is the second tech center that Siemens built in the city, following the Industrial Software Global R&D Center, which started operation last year.

Focuses of the new Siemens center include innovation and R&D in smart manufacturing and training of skilled personnel, according to the company.

Chengdu is one of the most promising cities in western China and a manufacturing hub, said Tony Hemmelgarn, president and CEO of Siemens PLM Software, noting that Siemens will share with China the technologies and solutions related to digital enterprises.

Siemens investment in Chengdu dates back to 1996 when it built its optical fiber works in the city. In 2013, Siemens put its largest digital factory in China into operation.
