 A. Church Is Not A Good Luck Charm: Je. 7:1-8 A. ±Ð·|¤£¬O©¯¹BÅ]¤O©Ò¡GC§Q¦Ì®Ñ7:1-8

  1. This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD :
  2. "Stand at the gate of the LORD's house and there proclaim this message: " 'Hear the word of the LORD, all you people of Judah who come through these gates to worship the LORD.
  3. This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.
  4. Do not trust in deceptive words and say, "This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD!"
  5. If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly,
  6. if you do not oppress the alien, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm,
  7. then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave your forefathers for ever and ever.
  8. But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless.

Verse 1, At the section opens, God sends Jeremiah to the temple gates to confront the false belief that God will not let harm come to the temple and those who live near it. Jeremiah rebukes the people and the shameless behavior of the people and their leader. Judah, he say, the themes of this section are false religion, idolatry, and hypocrisy. Jeremiah was almost put to death for this sermon, but he was saved by the officials of Judah (see chapter 26) ¡V from Commentary of NIV.

Verses 2-3, The people followed a worship ritual but maintained a sinful life-style. It was religion without personal commitment to God. We can easily do the same. Attending church, taking communion, teaching church school, and singing in the choir ¡V all are empty exercises unless we are truly doing them for God. It is good to do these activities, not because we ought to do them for the church, but because we want to do them for God.

Verses 5-8 as a summary statement of Judah¡¦s responsibilities in their covenant relationship with God and with each other. (Jeremiah, speaking for God, begged to differ.) ¡§The foreigner, the fatherless [and] the widow¡¨ (v. 6a) were most at risk of being taken advantage of, in economic transactions and in the courts. Effective actions safeguarding their rights were, in effect, a guarantee of justice for all¡Xas they would be now.

Following ¡§other gods¡¨ (v. 6b) severed Judah¡¦s relationship with God. It is not possible for humans to hold two entities in first place in our affections at the same time. God will be first or something else will be first. Holding ¡§other gods¡¨ first is always to our ¡§own harm,¡¨ because only God is God.

B. Church Is Not A Safe Place for Evil:             B. ±Ð°ó¤£¬O¨¸´c¤§¦w¥þ¦a¡G                                            Jeremiah C§Q¦Ì®Ñ 7:9-11

  1. " 'Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known,
  2. And then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, "We are safe"-safe to do all these detestable things?
  3. Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of robbers to you? But I have been watching! declare the LORD.

There are several parallels between how the people of Judah viewed their temple and how many today view their churches: 1, They didn¡¦t make the temple part of their daily living. We go to beautiful churches well-prepared for worship, but often we don¡¦t take the presence of God with us through the week.                            2, The image of the temple became more important than the substance of faith. The image of going to church and belonging to a group can become more important than a life changed for God. 3, The people used their temple as a sanctuary. Many use religious affiliation as a hideout, thinking it will protect them from evil and problems.

C. Don¡¦t Believe God to Shiloh:          Jeremiah 7:12:15                                                12. 'Go now to the place in Shiloh where I first made a dwelling for my name, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel. 13.  While you were doing all these things, declares the LORD, I spoke to you again and again, but you did not listen; I called you, but you did not answer.14.  Therefore, what I did to Shiloh I will now do to the house that bears my Name, the temple you trust in, the place I gave to you and your fathers. 15. I will thrust you from my presence, just as I did all your brothers, the people of Ephraim.'

Commentary from the Faith Connection:    In verses 12-15, God reminds the people of what took place in the village of ¡§Shiloh.¡¨ Understanding what the significance of Shiloh is critical to gaining a deeper understanding of God¡¦s message both to the people in Jeremiah¡¦s day, as well as for us today. In verse 12 God tells the people to take notice of how He destroyed the very dwelling place He made among the people at Shiloh. God refuses to lightly dismiss our sin, for the wages of sin is death.  My take: Therefore, we must have the right belief.

POINT: Can you think of specific examples of how God speaks to us ¡§again and again,¡¨ but we do not listen? What damage is caused by our refusal to answer God¡¦s call and listen to Him?

Please consider the ways we can truly express our true worship of God! Today, we must be careful that religious practices do not replace our daily walk with God and service to the poor, needy, and the broken-hearted around us.
