When all the Israelites were waiting for, entering into the Promised Land, they send spies to check out the land they are about to inhabit. When the spies returned they reported that the land flows with milk and honey; however, the people living there were too strong to overcome. Only Caleb believed they can overcome those occupying the land.

People often encourage others by saying, ¡§All you have to do is to have faith.¡¨ The truth is that faith always has an object. We must ask, ¡§On what or whom is my faith based?¡¨ Our scripture points out that the object of our faith is all-important.

The Israelites were about to enter the Promised Land. In preparation for this event, God told them to send spies into the land to explore it (13:1-2). Although they came back with evidence that the land truly did ¡§flow with milk and honey¡¨ (13:27), most of the spies gave a negative report of their findings the land also flowed with numerous enemies and fortified cities (13:28-29, 31-33). This terrifying report was more than the Israelites could handle. Even though Caleb tried to assure everyone that they could conquer the land with God¡¦s help (13:30), the people did not trust that God would help them this time. So they all wept together (14:1).

That night all the people of the community raised their voices and wept aloud (14:1).   All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, "If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this desert!  Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword?     Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to Egypt?"  And they said to each other, "We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt."

When the chorus of despair went up, everyone joined in. Their greatest fears were being realized. Losing their perspective, the people were caught up in the emotion of the moment, forgetting what they knew about God¡¦s character. What if the people had spent as much energy moving forward as they did moving back? They could have enjoyed their land, instead they never even entered it. When a cry of despair goes up around you, consider the larger perspective before you join in. You have better ways to use your energy than to complain.

Then Moses and Aaron felled face down in front of the whole Israelite assembly gathered there.     Joshua, son of Nun and Caleb, son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes and said to the entire Israelite assembly, "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.    If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us.  Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will swallow them up. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them."

With great miracles, God had led the Israelites out of slavery, through the desolate desert, and up to the very edge of the Promised Land. He had protected them, and fulfilled every promise. Yet when encouraged to take that last step of faith and enter the land, the people refused. After witnessing so many miracles, why did they stop trusting God? Why they refuse to enter the Promised Land when that had been their goal since leaving Egypt? They were afraid. Often we do the same thing. We trust God to handle the smaller issues but doubt his ability to take care of the big problems, the tough decisions, the frightening situations. Don¡¦t stop trusting God just as you are ready to reach your goal. He brought you this far and won¡¦t let you down now. We can continue trusting God by remembering all he has done for us.

He does forgive, but the consequences for the people¡¦s rebellion are harsh. Not one of the adults present at that time, except Caleb and Joshua, would get to see the Promised Land. While their sin was forgiven, the people still suffered the consequences of their rebellion. (¥Á¼Æ°O 14:20-25)

Today we have seen that fixing our eyes on circumstances, distrust, and disobedience toward God lead to fear and weaken our faith.
