14. Stand
firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the
breastplate of righteousness in place,
15. and
with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of
peace.
16. In
addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can
extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
17. Take
the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of
God.
Commentary of
Ephesians from p.2541 of N.I.V.: 6:10-17, In the
Christian life we battle against rulers and authorities (the powerful evil
forces of fallen angels headed by Satan, who is a vicious fighter, see 1
Petr 5:8). To withstand their
attacks, we must depend on God¡¦s strength and use every piece of his armor.
Paul is not only giving this counsel to the church, the body of Christ, but
to all individuals within the church. The whole body needs to be armed. As
you do battle against ¡§the powers of this dark world,¡¨ fight in the
strength of the church, whose power comes from the Holy Spirit.
3. Never Stop Praying:
Eph.:6:18-20 18.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and
requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all
the saints. 19. Pray also for me, that
whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly
make known the mystery of the gospel,
20. for which I am an ambassador in
chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
Commentary of Ephesians 6:18-20, from N.I.V.p.2542, 1. We response to
every situation we throughout the
day to take a brief prayers. 2. Ordering our life around God¡¦s
desires and teachings so that our very life becomes a prayer. 3. We can make prayer for our life and our life a prayer while living
in a world that needs God powerful influence. Praying for the Christians we know and for the church around the world. 4. Paul wrote powerful letters of
encouragement from prison. He did not ask the
Ephesians to pray that his chains would be removed. God can use us in any
circumstance to do his will. Even as we pray for a change in our
circumstances, we should also pray that God will accomplish his plan
through us right where we are; knowing God¡¦s eternal purpose for us will
help us through the difficult times.
5. Commentary
from ¡§the Faith
Connection¡¨: p.83, All of life
must be bathed in prayer. ¡§All kinds of prayers¡¨ include expressions of
thanksgiving and praise, confessions of faith or failure, requests and
intercession. Our prayers should be unceasing, fervent, comprehensive,
guided by the Holy Spirit, alert to needs around us, and persistent.
4. CONCLUSION: 1) Seek God¡¦s Mighty Power: 6:10-13, We need the power of God and His
protection. Paul says for us to put
on the ¡§full¡¨ armor of God at all time. 2) Stand Firm Against Evil: 6:14-17, Truth, which holds everything in its place, righteousness, that guards the vital organs, readiness, for the feet to share
the good news of peace to the world, faith, which
believes in things not yet seen and through which the arrows of doubt
cannot penetrate, salvation, which keeps us from losing our head, and the Word of the Lord, which is only offensive weapon of the
bunch. 3) Never Stop Praying: Eph.6:18-20, Pray on ¡§all
occasions¡¨ with ¡§all kinds¡¨ of prayers, praying for ¡§all¡¨ of God¡¦s people.
Prayer is a lifestyle, facilitated by the Spirit in v.18.
