In chapter 13, he tells them  that love is the necessary component to function as a community of believers.

by which all our relationships should be shaped.

12:31b But eagerly desire the greater gifts.   And now I will show you the most excellent way. 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 13:2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 13:3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Commentary: 1 Corinthians 12:31b-13:3, Paul encouraged the believers that your spiritual gifts are not for your own self-advancement. They were given to you for serving God and love others enhancing the spiritual growth of the body of believers.

2. Christian Character: 1 Co. 13:4-7,      Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Commentary: 1 Co. 13:4-7, Our society confuses love and lust. Unlike lust, God¡¦s kind of love is directed outward toward others, not inward toward ourselves. It is utterly unselfish. This kind of love goes against our natural inclinations. It is possible to practice this love only if God helps us set aside our own desires and instincts, so that we can give love while expecting nothing in return. Thus, the more we become like Christ, the more love we will show to others.

3 Love Endures: 1 Corinthians 13:8 ¡V 13, Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Commentary: 1 Corinthians 13:8 - 13    God gives us spiritual gifts for our lives on earth in order to build up, serve, and strengthen fellow Christians. The spiritual gifts are for the church. In eternity, we will be made perfect and complete and will be in the very presence of God. We will no longer need the spiritual gifts, so they will come to an end (v.10).

v. 13:12, Paul offers a glimpse into the future to give us hope that one day we will be complete when we see God face to face. This truth should strengthen our faith - we don¡¦t have all the answers now, but one day we will. Someday we will see Christ in person and be able to see with God¡¦s perspective.

v. 13:13, In morally corrupt Corinth, love had become a mixed up term with little meaning. Today people are still confused about love. Love is the greatest of all human qualities, and it is an attribute of God himself (1 John 4:8). Love involves unselfish service to others, to show it gives evidence that you care. Faith is the foundation and content of God¡¦s message; hope is the attitude and focus; love is the action. When faith and hope are in line, you are free to love completely because you understand how God loves. (p.2471)

3. Conclusion:                                              1) God¡¦s Love: God is love. He gave each of us different kinds of gifts to be used for helping others and serving God.

2) Christian Character: W. E. McCumber ¡§Love is another way of saying ¡¥imitation of Christ¡¦and holiness, ¡§love must act, give, spend and be spent for others. G. Campbell Morgan defined holiness as ¡§love-mastered life.¡¨

3) Love Endures:  John Wesley said of Christian love, ¡§It is the parent of generosity, openness and frankness, void of jealousy and suspicion, it is kind and friendly and patience, never overcome of evil, but overcoming evil with good.¡¨
