God intended to transform them by affecting their thought-lives, attitudes, speech, and conduct. They were ¡§to be like God¡¨ (4:23, 24). Only Christlike lives give fitting to be like God.

The metamorphosis that changes a caterpillar to a butterfly is profound. It¡¦s almost as if a completely new animal is created during its time in the cocoon. Today¡¦s passage from Ephesians compares our lives before and after being transformed by Jesus. Let¡¦s explore what this new creation looks like!

17. So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.

Pagans reject the little truth they knew. They sinned without shame. Their former lifestyle was totally incompatible with God¡¦s call to be self-giving like Christ (see 4:1-16; 5:2). Paul¡¦s description of pre-Christian existence applies to all of us before God¡¦s grace rescued us (2:1-10). Our old way of life and our personal history may no longer determine our identity; our new Lord must Christ.

Christ that way. 21. Surely you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24. and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Paul told the Ephesians to leave behind the old life of sin, since they were followers of Christ, if we keep listening to God, we will be changing all the time. Although change may be slow, it comes as we trust God to change us. Our old way of life before we believed in Christ is completely in the past, we should put it behind us like old clothes to be thrown away. We must put on the new road, head in the new direction and have the new way of thinking that the Holy Spirit gives. (Colossians 3:15- Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful).

25. Therefore, each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body.

26."In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,

27. and do not give the devil a foothold.

28. He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.

29. Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

30. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

31. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.

32. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.  5:1. Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children.

5:2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

The Bible does not tell us that we should not feel angry, but it points out that it is important to handle our anger properly. If vented thoughtlessly, anger can hurt others and destroy relationships. IF bottled up inside, it can cause us to become bitter and destroy us from within. Paul tells us to deal with our anger immediately in a way that builds relationships rather than destroys them. If we nurse our anger, we will give Satan an opportunity to divide us. Are you angry with someone right now? What can you do to resolve your differences? Don¡¦t let the day end before you begin to work on mending your relationship.

We can grieve the Holy Spirit by the way we live. Paul warns us against unwholesome language, bitterness, improper use of anger, brawling, slander and bad attitudes toward others. Instead of acting that way, we should be forgiving, just as God has forgiven us. Are you grieving or pleasing God with your attitudes and actions? Act in love toward your brothers and sisters in Christ, just as God acted in love by sending his Son to die for our sins.

The Holy Spirit within us is a seal or guarantee that we belong to God. The Holy Spirit is God¡¦s seal that we belong to him and his deposit guaranteeing that he will do what he has promised. The Holy Spirit is like a down payment, a deposit, a validating signature on the contract. The presence of the Holy Sprit in us demonstrates the genuineness of our faith, proves that we are God¡¦s children, and secures eternal life for us. His power works in us to transform us now, and what we experience now is a taste of the total change we will experience in eternity.
