Worldwide Outreach Teaching School by 賴美滿校長

(參聖經靈修版p.1028 &P.81 of the Faith Connection)

Scriptures: Psalms 105:1-11

Worldwide Outreach Teaching School                                                                                 by Dr. Meiman Lai Saidi           http://www.WorldwideOTS.org

Preface: Remembering God’s faithfulness in the past helps us to trust Him in the

present and the future. God’s mighty acts in history as remembered in the psalms,

Nehemiah, and provides verse-by verse commentary on the Scripture passage.

Last Week: We explored the value of trusting God when experiencing times of fear.

This Week: We will explore the importance of remembering God’s unfailing

      dependability throughout all human history.

1 Summons to Praise: Psalms 105:1-7, 1 Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name,

make known among the nations what he has done. 2 Sing to him, sing praise to him,

tell of all his wonderful acts. 3 Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who

seek the LORD rejoice. 4 Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always.

5 Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he

pronounced, 6 O descendants of Abraham his servant, O sons of Jacob, his chosen

ones. 7 He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth.

Commentary: The psalmist began with an injunction for God’s people to give

God praise. Although they were a minority people surrounded by others who did

not worship God, they could be thankful for the opportunity to rebuild their lives

and community in their homeland. If God seems far away, persist in your search

for him, God rewards those who sincerely look for him (Hebrews 11:6). Jesus

promised, “Seek and you will find(Matthew 7:7). The psalmist suggested a

valuable way to find God- become familiar with the way he has helped his people

in the past. The Bible records the history of God’s people, their heritage stretched

back to Abraham (v. 6a) and was marked by God’s gracious choice of them.

Because they were and are God’s “chosen ones” (v.6b) and He was their “Lord”

(v.7a), God performed on their behalf “wonders,” “miracles, and “judgments” (v.5).

In searching its pages, we will discover a loving God who is waiting for us to find

him.                                                              (P.81 of the Faith Connection& p1219 of N.I.V.)

  1. Grounds For Praise : Psalms 105:8-11, 8 He remembers his covenant forever, the word he commanded, for a thousand generations, 9 the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac. 10 He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant: 11 To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion you will inherit.

Commentary: Psalms 105:8-11, The nation Israel, the people through whom God

revealed his laws to mankind, is descended from Abraham. God chose Abraham

and promised that his descendants would live in the land of Canaan (now called

Israel), and that they would be too numerous to count (Genesis 17:6-8). Abraham’s

son was Isaac; Isaac’s son was Jacob. These three men are considered the

patriarchs or founders of Israel. God blessed them because of their faith (see

         Hebrews 11:8-21 & p.1219 of N.I.V.)

  1. Israel In Egypt: Psalms 105:23-27, 23 Then Israel entered Egypt; Jacob lived as an

alien in the land of Ham. 24 The LORD made his people very fruitful; he made them too numerous for their foes, 25 whose hearts he turned to hate his people, to conspire against his servants. 26 He sent Moses his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen. 27 They performed his miraculous signs among them, his wonders in the land of Ham.

Commentary: Psalms 105:23-27, Did God cause the Egyptians to hate the Israelites?

God is not the author of evil, but the Bible writers did not always distinguish

between God’s ultimate action and the intermediate steps. Thus, by God blessing

the Israelites, the Egyptians came to hate them (Exodus 1:8-22). Because God

caused the Israelites’ blessing, He is also said to have caused the Egyptians to

hate them. God used their animosity as a means to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.

                                                                                                                             (p.1220 of N.I.V.)

  1. Deliverance from Egypt: Psalms 105:42-45, 42 For he remembered his holy promise given to his servant Abraham. 43 He brought out his people with rejoicing, his chosen ones with shouts of joy; 44 he gave them the lands of the nations, and they fell heir to what others had toiled for- 45 that they might keep his precepts and observe his laws. Praise the LORD.

Commentary: Psalms 105:42-45, By remembering these events and their

connection to God’s “holy promise (v.42a) to Abraham, God’s people were

also reminded of the appropriate response: “rejoicing…with shouts of Joy” (v43).

As their ancestors exulted in God’s faithful deliverance and provision, so they

sought to return to the land and rebuild their lives and community.

The psalm concluded with a simple yet unambiguous “Praise the Lord”

(v.45c) Giving God praise day to day is a way of living into the ongoing,

unfolding faithfulness of God.                                     (P.83 of the Faith Connection)

      4.  CONCLUSIONS:

1). Summons to Praise: Psalms 105:1-7 The first part of the psalm is a call to

worship through remembering all God has done. God’s people are to shout it

from the rooftops: The Lord has been faithful.

2). Grounds For Praise: Psalms 105:8-11, Verses 8-11 tell of the first covenant God

made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Remember when the Lord speaks in the

Old Testament, He tends to introduce himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and

Jacob. The story back to square one of God’s relationship with God’s people.

3). Israel In Egypt: Psalms 105:23-27, God’s story with Abraham’s children did not

end while they were in captivity in Egypt. Even in their suffering, God

remembered His covenant and interceded for them in amazing ways. By this

time, all of the original witnesses to the plagues of Egypt, the Passover, and the

crossing of the Red Sea had been dead for generations. Retelling the story made

        those events alive again.

4). Deliverance From Egypt: Psalms 105:42-45, Verses 42-45 are summary statements

        - after all was said and done, God was faithful to the covenant He made and

remade with His people.  When we worship together, we are living out God’s

story in such a way that it can become our story as well, the story of God

redeeming the world in Christ is retold in a profound way. In receiving the

elements representing the broken body and shed blood of Christ, we participate

in a new event of God’s redemption in the present day. One important benefit of

Bible study is to understand how God moved in the past and worked in the lives

        of people.
