Unit 2. PSALMS

                                Section 11, A Prayer of Confession               8/16/2020

Scriptures: Psalms 15:1-5

       Worldwide Outreach Teaching School

  by Dr. Meiman Lai Saidi

http://www.WorldwideOTS.org

Preface: For early Christians, the book of Psalms was their most valuable resource for worship, serving as the first ¡§hymnbook¡¨ of the church. One of the most famous of all the psalms is Psalm 51, David¡¦s cry of penitence after his adultery with Bathsheba and murder of Uriah. Today¡¦s session describes king David¡¦s broken relationship with God after he sinned with Bathsheba and had her husband killed. In today¡¦s psalm, king David seeks to repair his broken relationship with God. He asks for God to make him new, repairing the breach, and creating in him a new heart.

Last Week: We explored the causes of human discouragement and the ways God

provides hope, and strength during those times.

This Week: We will explore the ways confession unleashes God¡¦s redemptive power

                     in our lives.

1.      PRAYER FOR FORGIVENESS: Psalm 51:1-2, 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Commentary: Imagining a student who has failed a test and gone to see the teacher about his future in prospects in this course. The Psalmist was in such a place of complete dependence on God, and so prayed ¡§Have mercy on me¡¨ (v.1a). The good news is that the psalmist¡¦s appeal was made to a God who was known for ¡§unfailing love¡¨ (v.1b) and ¡§great compassion¡¨. (v.1c).                       Forgiveness is what the psalmist asked for. The gift of forgiveness is expressed with three vigorous verbs: blot out (v.1d), wash away (v. 2a) and cleanse (v.2b).

Psalms 51:1-2 (P.69 of the Faith Connection)

2.      Confession of Sin and Rightness of Divine Judgment: Psalm 51:3, 4:

3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.

Commentary:  ¡§I know¡¨ (v.3a) and ¡§before me¡¨ (v.3b) suggested personal ownership of the sin problem, while ¡¥Against you¡¦(v.4a) and ¡¥in your sight¡¦ (v.4) acknowledged the impact of sin on one¡¦s relationship with God. Sin affected others and God.               (P.70 of the Faith Connection)

Confession of Sinfulness: Psalms 51:5-6, 5Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. 6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.

Commentary: 51:5-6, Sin is permeation throughout all the human life; The psalmist acknowledged this truth, referencing his birth (v.5a) as an entrance into the world that would ultimately influence his decision to sin. The psalmist was clear to own up to his own sin, not blaming others but rather acknowledging the social realities that shaped him and us all. The message of verse 6 reinforced this by asserting that even in the womb (before birth), God was present with gifts of truth and wisdom for the human situation.  (P.70 of the Faith Connection)

3.      PRAYER FOR FORGIVENESS: Psalm 51:7,9, 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.

Commentary: Psalm 51:7,9 - Continuing the themes in verses 1-2, the psalmist

used the image of the ¡§hyssop¡¨ bush (v.7a) which was associated with a variety

             of cleansing rituals (e.g. Exodus 12:22-Passover; Leviticus 14:4, 6¡Vleprosy.

Numbers 19:6, 18-corpses). The imagery of washing is repeated, but here with

reference to ¡§snow¡¨ (v.7b) and its positive association with the color white. To be

¡§whiter than snow¡¨ was to be prepared for the presence of God, in contrast to the

color black and darkness which were associated with lament, sickness, and

mourning.  The final new image in this prayer for forgiveness is the hiding (or

turning) of God¡¦s face (v.9a). This was expressing displeasure. The psalmist

asked God to graciously separate himself from his sins. (P.70-71 of the Faith Connection)

4.      PRAYER FOR RESTORATION: Psalm 51:8,10-12, 8 Let me hear joy and

gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

Commentary: The goal of confession is mor than just being forgiven, significant though that is. Beyond forgiveness is healing and restoration, and these seem to have been in the mind and heart of the psalmist. Thus, he prays to once again experience ¡§joy and gladness¡¨ (v.8a), that the crushed bones of a sick and stressed body might ¡§rejoice¡¨ (v.8b), and that his ¡§heart¡¨ (v. 10a) and creativity, and a steadfast inner disposition. This restoration was dependent on the presence of God through the Holy Spirit (the ¡§mercy¡¨ asked for in v. 1).

        V. 51:10, Because we are born as sinners (51:5), our natural inclination is to please ourselves rather than God. David followed that inclination when he took another man¡¦s wife. We also follow it when we sin in any way. Like David, we must ask God to cleanse us rom within (51:7), clearing our hearts and spirits for new thoughts and desires. Right conduct can come only from a clean heart and spirit. Ask God to create a pure heart and spirit in you.

        V. 51:12, Do you ever feel stagnant in your faith, as though you are just going through the motions? David felt this way. He had sinned with Bathsheba and had just been confronted by Nathan the prophet. In his prayer he cried, ¡§Restore to me the joy of your salvation.¡¨ God wants us to be close to him and to experience his full and complete life. But sin that remains unconfessed makes such intimacy impossible. Confess your sin to God. You may still have to face some earthly consequences, as David did, but God will give back the joy of your relationship with Him.  (N.I.V. P. 980, 981 & P.71 of the Faith Connection)

      4.  CONCLUSIONS:

1). PRAYER FOR FORGIVENESS: David¡¦s prayer of repentance

begins with a cry for mercy to the God who is both powerful enough to forgive

and cleanse him and compassionate enough to actually do it. The Holy Spirit,

speaking through the voice of the prophet Nathan (2 Samuel 12), has done a

number on King David, convicting him of his sin (Psalm 51:1-2).

2). PRAYER FOR FORGIVENESS AGAIN: David is asking God

to do something for him he cannot do for himself. If God cleanses him, he will

be truly clean and will be able to rejoice again (Psalm 51:7,9).

3). PRAYER FOR RESTORATION: Confession must become repentance.

Repentance is met with justification and regeneration, where the Lord makes us

righteous and creates a willing spirit within us, restoring our relationship with

God and our neighbors. (Psalm 51:8,10-12).
