Today¡¦s lesson is to explore the ancient towns of Capernaum,
and the miracle in today¡¦s story is one of three specific instances of Jesus
raising the dead recorded in the New Testament ¡V
The widow¡¦s son found in Luke 7:11-17. Others the raising of
Lazarus is found in John 11:4 only. And the raising of Jairus¡¦ Þݾ|daughter
(Luke 8:41). However, we know others, not recorded, were raised too (Matthew
10:8, 11:5). This session is written by Carl Leth, the director of the center
for Faith & Culture at Olivet Nazarene University and pastor of
Resurrection Community Church of the Nazarene, a multicultural urban
congregation in Kankakee, Illinois (IL).

We saw that traditions can be
counterproductive when they shift from worship and faithfulness to simply
keeping human-made rules.

We will discover the ways in which God
responds to us in our time of need.

When Jesus had finished saying all this in the hearing of the people,
he entered Capernaum. There a centurion's servant, whom his master
valued highly, was sick and about to die. The centurion heard of Jesus and sent
some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. When
they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him,
"This man
deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our
synagogue."

The centurion, believing he was unworthy of
hosting Jesus in his home, also demonstrated a unique view, one espousing
solidarity with Jesus in terms of the extension of authority: ¡§For I myself am
a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ¡§Go¡¨, and he
goes; and that one, ¡§Come,¡¨ and he comes.¡¨ V.8 by suggesting that Jesus had
only to ¡§say the word,¡¨ For example, in Luke 6:19 Jesus was surrounded by a
crowd who were ¡¥trying to touch Jesus, for power came out from him and healed
them all.¡¦ The centurion¡¦s belief in Jesus can heal his servant in a long
distance.

That is why I did not
even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant
will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me.
I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes; I say
to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it.¡¦ When Jesus heard this, he was amazed
at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I
have not found such great faith even in Israel." Then the men who had been
sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

Soon
afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a
large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person
was being carried out--the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a
large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went
out to her and he said, "Don't cry." Then he went up and touched the
coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, "Young man, I say to
you! Get up!" The dead man sat up
and began to talk, and Jesus gave him
back to his mother. They were all filled with awe and praised God. "A
great prophet has appeared among us," they said. "God has come to
help his people." This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the
surrounding country.

The Roman centurion didn¡¦t come to Jesus, and he
didn¡¦t expect Jesus to come to him, Just as this officer did not need to be
present to have his orders carried out, so Jesus didn¡¦t need to be present to
heal. The centurion¡¦s faith was especially amazing because he was a Gentile who
had not been brought up to know a loving God.

illustrates salvation. The whole world was dead in sin (Ephesians 2:1). Just as
the widow¡¦s son was dead. Being dead, we could do nothing to help ourselves ¡V
we couldn¡¦t even ask for help. But God had compassion on us, and he sent Jesus
to raise us to life with him (Ephesians 2:4-7). The dead man did not earn his
second chance at life, and we cannot earn our new life in Christ. But we can
accept God¡¦s gift of life, praise God for it, and use our lives to do His will.

1) The
Centurion: ²Ä¤@¡BC¿q»P¤@¦ì¥~¦a¤Hªº¬G¨Æ¡A§Ú̬ݨìC¿q¦ù®i¶V¹LµS¤Ó¤H¤§¬É½u¡A©µªø®¦¨åµ¹©óù°¨¤§¦Ê¤Òªø¡CC¿q»¡: ¡§§Ú±q¥¼¬Ý¹L¦b¥H¦â¦C¤¤¦³³o¼Ë¤jªº«H¤ßªº¤H¡¨¡CÃö©ó¦Ê¤Òªøªº«H¤ß¦³¦ó¯S§O©O
? ±q¥L§Ú̦p¦ó¾Ç¨ì«H¤ß©O ? The 1st episode shows Jesus engaging a foreigner,
we see Jesus reaching beyond the limits of the Jewish people to extend
miraculous grace to Roman centurion. Jesus Comments on the remarkable faith of
the centurion: (I have not found such great faith even in Israel), What do you
think was so exceptional about the faith of the centurion? What can we learn
about faith from him?
2) The Funeral:

He
encounters the Nain in the burial procession of her only son. Jesus saw this
widow in Luke 7:13, Jesus showed His compassion as He gave the raised son back
to his mother. These two stories are about physical healing. Share about
experiences when you have seen God heal physically. The most important of the lesson from today is
that Jesus is our compassionate Lord of steadfast love and mercy, able to
respond to our every need in exactly the right way, at exactly the right time.

from Jesus to show our compassionate love and mercy, outreach beyond the boundaries
and cultural backgrounds to work for the people who don¡¦t know God? If you
can¡¦t, just ask Jesus to give you the power you need.
