6.      The apostles and elders met to consider this question.

7.      After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: "Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.

8.      God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us.

9.      He made no distinction between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith.

10.  Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of the disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear?

11.   No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.¡¨12  The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the miraculous signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them.

Commentary: Acts: 15:5-12,

Peter¡¦s brief comments focused on God¡¦s actions.  God alone could discern the human condition so that, by giving Gentile believers the same Spirit given to others, God offered witness to God¡¦s own redemptive work among the Gentiles. Thus, as Peter concluded before (10:34), God did not discriminate between Jews and non-Jews, recalls the voice in Peter¡¦s vision, ¡§Do not call anything impure that God has made clean¡¨ (10:15). This God, ¡§who knows the heart,¡¨ cleansed their hearts by faith. Faith alone was the criterion for salvation. Peter reminded everyone that salvation came ¡§through the grace of our Lord Jesus,¡¨ not through anything associated with the Jewish law.

2.Confirmation from Scripture:

Acts 15:13-18, When they finished, James spoke up: "Brothers, listen to me. Simon has described to us how God at first showed his concern by taking from the Gentiles a people for himself.

The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written: " 'After this I will return and rebuild David's fallen tent. Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it,

that the remnant of men may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who bear my name, says the Lord, who does these things' that have been known for ages.

Commentary: Acts 15:13 - 18

v.13, This James is Jesus¡¦ brother. He became the leader of church in Jerusalem and wrote the book of James. V.14, Simon is another name for Peter. James¡¦ leadership in the Jerusalem church is obvious, given his role in the meeting. Interestingly, he only responded to Peter¡¦s comments. James¡¦ introduction to the quotation of Amos 9:11-12 makes it clear that he understood the passage to agree with God¡¦s intervening actions. He interpreted ¡§David¡¦s fallen tent¡¨ as the people of God, comprised of both Jews and Gentiles, over whom the Messiah reigns as Lord.

3. Guidance for Faithfulness and Fellowship: Acts 15:19-21, "It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood. For Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath."

Commentary: Acts 15:19-21, James¡¦s judgment was that Gentile believers did not have to be circumcised, but they should stay away from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality (a common part of idol worship), and from eating meat of strangled animals and from consuming blood (reflecting the Biblical teaching that the life is in the blood-Leviticus 17:14). If Gentile Christians would abstain from these practices, they would please God and get along better with their Jewish brothers and sisters in Christ. Of course, there were other actions inappropriate for believers, but the Jews were especially concerned about these four. This compromise helped the church grow unhindered by the cultural differences of Jews and Gentiles. When we share our message across cultural and economic boundaries, we must be sure that the requirements for faith we set up are God¡¦s, not people¡¦s. (insert from N.I.V.p.2354)

    4.Conclusion:

1. The Salvation Story: Acts 15:5-12, Grace through faith (See acts 15:9,11), Gentiles received the Holy Spirit. Too. God purified both Jews and Gentiles and saved them.

2. Confirmation from Scripture: 15:13-18,

James, the brother of Jesus quoted Amos 9:11,12 in Acts 15:16,17. James ask Gentile believers to follow the as 1) do not eat the food offed to idols, because any association with idol worship put believers in danger of breaking the first 2 of the Ten Commandments.

    2) Eating blood was prohibited because blood was sacred and an important part of the sacrificial system.

3.      Guidance for Faithfulness and Fellowship:           Acts 15:19-21,

Being a follower of Christ means placing our faith in Christ alone-turning our backs on sin and turning our lives toward God. Thanking God for the grace and faith that brought believers together. Ask for guidance, grace, and charity in interactions with believers with different experiences.
