14 panda cubs celebrate first birthday in Sichuan
14 panda cubs celebrate first birthday in Sichuan
9/16/2020
Fourteen giant
panda
cubs born in 2019 celebrated their first birthday at a party Wednesday at the Shenshuping base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant
Panda
, southwest China's Sichuan Province.
Staff at the research center prepared a fancy birthday cake and different presents for the
panda
cubs. The lively and active cubs looked around in the garden or tried to unwrap their gifts when they entered the party venue.
"What we took into consideration mainly were the issues of safety and health (in choosing the presents). First, the stuffs we chose must ensure that
panda
s will not bite or nibble them. Then within the wrap of the gifts are food they could eat usually, like bamboo shoots and apples, all edible stuff," said Pan Chao, a keeper at the research center.
All the 14
panda
cubs are now in a kindergarten at the research center, who are divided into three classes depending on the month of birth. Actually the one-year-old
panda
cubs are most active and naughty, just like three- to four-year-old kids.
"They're over a year old now and could start eating fresh bamboo, so we're going to prepare more diversified food for them to guarantee their healthy growth," said Pan.
So far, the captive population of giant
panda
at the center exceeds 300, accounting for about 60 percent of the total giant
panda
population in captivity in the world.
