Unit 1. Ezra/Nehemiah Session 6, Reading, Remembering, And Restoring Scriptures: Nehemiah 8:5:12; 9:1-3 7/12/20
Worldwide Outreach Teaching School by Dr. Meiman Lai Saidi
https://www.WorldwideOTS.org
Preface: Christians
are clear that the Old Testament writers took great delight in the law. This
week¡¦s illustrated Bible life podcast on FoundryLeader.com focuses on a
biblical understanding of the law. We have to understand the importance of the
written Word (God¡¦s Word) in shaping the Christian life and faith. The Word of
God calls us powerfully to community, confession, commitment, and celebration.
Last Week: We
learned how God is our source of strength when we face opposition.
This week: We
will learn the ways we can honor God by how we respond to the
instruction of His Word.
- The Call to Community: Nehemiah
8:5-8, 5 Ezra opened
the book. All the people could see him because he was standing above them;
and as he opened it, the people all stood up. 6 Ezra praised the
LORD, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, "Amen! Amen!"
Then they bowed down and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the
ground. 7 The Levites--Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah,
Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad,
Hanan and Pelaiah--instructed the people in the Law while the people were
standing there. 8 They read from the Book of the Law of
God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people could understand
what was being read.
Commentary: After the walls and gates of Jerusalem had been secured, people
gathered to hear the word of the Lord. They asked Ezra to read aloud from ¡§the
Book of the Law of Moses¡¨ (v. 1). This undoubtedly refers to stories and laws
of Israel¡¦s early ancestors, which are found in the first five books of the
Bible. They tell of how God called Abraham, redeemed His people from Egypt,
instructed them with His laws, and led them through the wilderness toward the
Promised Land.
Hearing these words strengthened the bonds of the community in Jerusalem
that day. This was their shared story. Entire families, ¡§both men and women¡¨
and their children, came together to hear the history of their people (v. 2).
It was so compelling that they stood for six hours, ¡§from daybreak till noon¡¨
(v. 3). Throughout the morning, Ezra paused at times while Levites took turns explaining
the meaning of passages.
As such moments can do, the reading of Scripture moved the community to
unite in praise to God. Lifting their hands in a gesture that symbolized
reaching for heaven, the people affirmed the truth of God¡¦s Word by declaring,
¡§Amen¡¨ (v. 6). Then, they bowed down in honor of the Author of Scripture and of
their history with Him.
Such a scene shows us how reading the Word of God strengthens bonds among
believers. It reminds us that we are all part of the same family with a common
heritage of redemption. God
has worked in the lives of our spiritual ancestors in the past and offers us
hope for the present as well as the future.
(Excerpts from the Faith Connection p. P.37, 38)
- The Call to Celebration: Nehemiah 8:9-12, 9 Then Nehemiah
the governor, Ezra
the priest and
scribe, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all,
"This day is sacred to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep." For
all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law. 10 Nehemiah said,
"Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who
have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the
joy of the LORD is your strength." 11 The Levites calmed all the people, saying,
"Be still, for this is a sacred day. Do not grieve." 12 Then all the people
went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with
great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made known to
them.
Commentary:
8:9-12, Ezra admonished the people to rejoice rather than mourn.
The reason he called for celebration was because they had gathered ¡§on
the first
day of the seventh month¡¨ (v.2). This was the Feast of Trumpets,
a time for
celebrating God¡¦s provision in
the annual harvest they had just gathered. Often
when we celebrate and give to others (even when we don¡¦t feel like it), we are
strengthened spiritually and
filled with joy. Enter into celebrations that honor God,
and allow him to fill you with
his joy. It was a ¡§holy day,¡¨ a
day set apart special
for God (v 11). So, Nehemiah encouraged his people to focus upon the hope
contained in God¡¦s Word. As we read Scripture, we
get to know the Creator of
life.
We learn of how gracious and forgiving God is, how
He constantly works with us
to make us into the persons He created us to be. Focusing on such
amazing grace
evokes ¡§joy,¡¨ which gives us ¡§strength¡¨ for everyday
life (v.10).
(Excerpts
from the Faith Connection p.38 & p.978 of N.I.V.)
- The Call to
Confession: Nehemiah 9:1-3, 1 On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered
together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and having dust on their heads. 2 Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all
foreigners. They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the
wickedness of their fathers. 3
They stood where they were and
read from the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of the
day and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the LORD
their God.
Commentary: Nehemiah 9:1-3,
Eating, wearing sackcloth, and putting dust on the head
were public signs of sorrow and repentance (v.1). The Hebrews practiced open
confession, admitting their sins to one
another. Reading and studying God¡¦s Word
should precede confession (see 8:18) because God can show us where we are sinning. Honest confession should precede worship, because
we cannot have a right relationship with God if we hold on the certain sins.
(v.2-3).
