Unit 1. The Ten
Commandments
Session 12 ¡§Be Content " 11/22/2020
Exodus 20:17; 1 Timothy 6:6-10; 1 John 2:15-17
By Dr. Meiman
Lai, Saidi
http://www.WorldwideOTS.org
Preface: The final commandment in
the Ten Commandments forbids coveting, the
inordinate
desire for what others have. Today, we will see that followers of
Jesus are called to
reject covetousness and pursue contentment.
Last Week: We saw how truthfulness is characteristic of those who walk with God.
This Week: We
will see
the importance of experiencing the contentment that comes
from loving God, not things.
- Misplaced Desires: Exodus 20:17, ¡§You shall
not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife,
or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that
belongs to your neighbor.¡¨
Commentary:
To covet is to wish to have the possessions of others. It goes beyond simply
admiring someone else¡¦s possessions or thinking, ¡§I¡¦d like to have one of
those.¡¨ Coveting includes envy ¡V resenting the fact that others have what you
do not. God knows, however, that possessions never make anyone happy for long. Since
only God can supply all our needs, true contentment is found only in Him. When
you begin to covet, try to determine if a more basic need is leading you to
envy. For example, you may covet someone¡¦s success, not because you want to
take it away from him, but because you would like to feel as appreciated by others
as he is. If this is the case, pray that God will help you deal your resentment
and meet your basic needs.
(Excerpts
from p166 of N.I.V.)
- The Desire To Get Rich: 1 Timothy
6:6-10, ¡§6
But
godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we
can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we
have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 People who want to get rich fall into
temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that
plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds
of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and
pierced themselves with many griefs.
Commentary: 1 Timothy 6:6-10, ¡§Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, most people still
believe that money brings happiness. Rich people craving greater riches can be
caught in an endless cycle that only ends in ruin and destruction. How can you
keep away from the love of money? Paul gives us some guidelines: 1) realize that one day riches will all be gone (6:7, 17) ; 2)be content with what you have (6:8) ; 3) monitor what you are willing to do to get
more money (6:9,10); 4) love people more than money (6:11; 5) love God¡¦s work more than money (6:11) ; 6) freely share what you have with others (6:18). (See
Proverbs 30:7-9 for more on avoiding the love of money.) (excerpts from N.I.V.p.2605)
- Loving the World: 1 John 2:15-17, ¡§15 Do not love the
world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the
Father is not in him. 16 For everything in the world--the cravings
of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and
does--comes not from the Father but from the world.
17
The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God
lives forever.¡¨
Commentary: 1 John
2:15-17, In the 10th commandment
(Exodus 20:17). ¡§Love for the Father¡¨ and the covetous desire to possess
¡§everything in the world¡¨ are incompatible. Wesley (¡§The Danger of Riches¡¨)
thought it challenged fallen humanity¡¦s insatiable acquisitiveness. We use our
excess money to indulge ourselves with frivolous expenditures on new clothes,
bigger houses, and useless decorations. God entrusts us with more than enough
so we can enjoy the blessing of feeding the hungry and clothing the naked.
John Wesley (¡§The use of Money¡¨)
believed ¡§the pride of life¡¨ (2:16) referred to our vain pursuit of honor,
admiration, and praise that comes from conspicuous consumption. We must work
each day, and we must avoid the desire for people to notice our huge piles of
¡§toys¡¨ and instead develop a thankfulness for how God has blessed us.
- Conclusions:
1). Misplaced Desires: Inordinate
(excessive) desire leads to the violation of the
others.
2). The Desire to Get Rich: The possessions we
have so eagerly sought will not
pass from this life to the next, the life of the age of
the kingdom of God.
3). Loving the World: Loving the things
of this world that desire in us will pass
away. Those whose hearts and
desires are rightly oriented toward God and the
Will of God will experience abundant life in the age to come.
