In today¡¦s session, the wait is finally
over. Angelic appearances, miraculous signs, and words of prophesy have all led
to this point¡X
A Savior is born. Hallelujah! ¡§The Word became flesh and made his dwelling
among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and
Only, who came from the Father, full of grace
and truth (John1:14).¡¨

¡§In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be
taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place
while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to
register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea;
to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of
David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to
him and was expecting a child.¡¨

tax collection. The Jews didn¡¦t have to serve in the Roman army, but they could
not avoid paying taxes. Augustus¡¦s decree went out in God¡¦s perfect timing and
according to God¡¦s perfect plan to bring his Son into the world.

Jesus was born in the very town prophesied for his birth (Micah 5:2). Joseph
and Mary were both descendants of David. The Old Testament is filled with
prophecies that the Messiah would be born in David¡¦s royal line (see, for
example, Isaiah 11:1; Jeremiah 33:15; Ezekiel 37:24; Hosea 3:5).

¡§And there were shepherds living out in the
fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord
appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were
terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be
afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the
Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and
lying in a manger." Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared
with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to
God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." So they
hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the
manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been
told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the
shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered
them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all
the things they had heard and seen which were just as they had been told.

The shepherds no doubt had been spellbound by the heavenly
announcement. Now they rightly turned their attention to the event itself and
¡§hurried¡¨ (somewhat as Mary had ¡§hurried¡¨ to visit her relative Elizabeth in
1:39). They understood that the angelic message had been a word from ¡§the
Lord.¡¨ Upon arriving in Bethlehem they found the family, ¡§Mary and
Joseph and the baby¡¨ and were quick to ¡§spread the word¡Kabout this child.¡¨
God¡¦s in-breaking of love led the shepherds to worship. It also prepared the
way for the worship of Jesus by countless others who would hear the
story directly from them, or read it in Luke¡¦s gospel. The divine revelation of
love compelled them to tell this majestic story. In a quieter way, Mary carried
the events ¡§in her heart¡¨ where she ¡§treasured¡¨ and ¡§pondered them.¡¨ We pause
to notice that Mary, a woman, was mentioned first in verse 16, unusual for that
culture. These moments in Luke¡¦s gospel that seem to give additional insight
into the heart of Mary have led some scholars to suggest that Mary was one of the
sources for Luke¡¦s gospel.
Certainly she will forever hold a place of honor as the one through
whom God¡¦s glorious love was especially revealed.
