disciples¡Xthen and now¡Xin the direction of the
harvest field. He¡¦s calling them to be workers in the kingdom of God. Jesus
provides us practical principles for participating in His mission. Jesus has
just descended from the Mount of Transfiguration and has ¡§resolutely set¡¨ His heart
and mind on Jerusalem (9:51) and the last stage of His journey to the cross.

In verse 2 Jesus calls His 72 missionaries to pray. In so doing He invites them into God¡¦s
mission. ¡§Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his
harvest field.¡¨ It is important that we are invited to participate in God¡¦s
mission. God calls, God equips, God sends, and every step along the way we must
remember that God is with us.

the harvest would have drawn the attention of Luke¡¦s original audience back to
prophetic texts like Micah 4:11-13 and
Isaiah 27:12-13 and 63:1-6. In these and other
texts, the harvest was depicted as the final judgment and the final gathering of
Israel. Jesus is building on this image, but in a more positive way,
calling people into the kingdom of God. Jesus is now inviting us to participate
in the bringing in of the kingdom harvest, where the Old Testament prophets
spoke of this activity as something God did alone. There is also, inherent in
the harvest imagery as well as the rest of this passage, an urgency that is
seen in the instructions Jesus gives to His missionaries.

¡§Do not take
a purse or a bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road . . . Do not
move around from house to house¡¨ (Vv. 4,
7b). Jesus¡¦ words may seem odd at first, but when we consider the important and
time-sensitive nature of His mission, these instructions make more sense. Jesus
is saying, ¡§Travel light so you can move swiftly, don¡¦t get distracted along
the way, and don¡¦t spend any time trying to improve your situation or your own
personal comfort¡Xstay focused on our mission! It is also likely that Luke is
calling his audience to remember Elisha¡¦s instructions in 2 Kings 4:29 to his
servant Gehazi to avoid distractions on his way to heal a young Shunammite
girl. The harvest is ready, the need is pressing, the mission is of eternal
importance, and the missionaries must embrace a sense of urgency.

"When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what
is set before you. Heal the sick who are there and tell them, 'The kingdom of
God is near you.' But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its
streets and say, 'Even the dust of your town that sticks to our feet we wipe
off against you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God is near.' I tell you,
it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town. "Woe
to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that
were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they
would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it will be
more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. And you,
Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the
depths.
"He who listens to you listens to me; he who
rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me." The
seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to
us in your name.
" He replied, "I saw Satan
fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on
snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will
harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice
that your names are written in heaven."

city that God destroyed because of its great sinfulness (Ge. 19). The city¡¦s
name is often used to symbolize wickedness and immorality. Sodom will
suffer at judgment day, but cities who saw the Messiah and rejected him will
suffer even more. Korazin was a city near the Sea of Galilee,
probably about two miles north of Caprnaum. Tyre and Sidon
were cities destroyed by God as punishment for their wickedness (see Ezekiel
26-28).

Capernaum was Jesus¡¦ base for his Galilean
ministry. The city was located at an important crossroads used by traders and
the Roman army, so a message proclaimed in Capernaum was likely to go
far. But many people of Capernaum did not understand Jesus¡¦ miracles or believe
his teaching, and the city was included among those who would be judged for
rejecting him.

bringing the peace of the kingdom (vv. 5-6). If we are to be agents of this

speaking peace into the lives of others, (being Christlike in the things
we say or do).
